As my husband was sorting through all the cards and paperwork that we brought home from the hospital along with our new son, Todd, I heard him sigh. Thinking that he was probably as tired as I was, I suggested he catch a nap. Then he told me that he was looking at the recommended newborn immunization schedule that he found in all the doctor's instructions.

Apparently his childhood friend had suffered bad side effects from one of the vaccines in what was a very rare instance. That led us to a discussion about our own son's newborn immunization schedule. I think we are going to check into this a bit more before we simply accept this as the only way to go. Who knew parenting could be so filled with major decisions, even for newborns!

I had no idea how busy I would be as a new mother. I certainly didn't expect to be running Alista back and forth to the doctor's to keep up with the typical newborn immunization schedule that most parents follow. In fact, now I am really wondering if all these vaccinations can be good for such a tiny human being, especially when they are so close together.

I think I need to research this and talk to some professionals who have other opinions. I want Alista to be thoroughly protected from nasty childhood diseases, but I do not want to put her at risk for complications in the process of meeting that newborn immunization schedule. I guess it's time to look into this in greater depth.

If you're a new parent, you've probably already been doing some thinking about the controversy surrounding infant vaccinations. The typical newborn immunization schedule is really tight and heavy, with several different vaccines often given together. Those who are concerned, suggest that this is too much, too soon, and too close together.

Until we became pregnant with our firstborn son, I would not have given this much thought at all, but now I find myself wanting to protect him, not only from disease, but from complications from these vaccinations. If it is possible to stretch out the newborn immunization schedule and space these dosages in the process, I think that sounds much safer to me.
